On the American market, the 1891 Mosin Nagant has gone from bargain beater to a prized mil surplus possession. All in the span of a few, perplexingly short years. In some ways, the astronomical prices of Garands, Mausers, and Enfields generated an increased demand for WWII-era pieces by younger collectors. Gunsmiths submitted three rifles for evaluation in 1889. One was a three-line design (1 line = 1/10th inch, 3 lines = 7.62mm/.30cal) by Captain Sergei Ivanovich Mosin of the Imperial Red Army. The second was a 3.5-line design (9mm/.35cal) by Belgian designer Leon Nagant. Another three-line design came from Captain Zinoviev.OTOH, rifle crates are built for the weight of 10 or 20 rifles (100-200lb, give or take), with the weight distributed on racks. A cubic foot of books weighs 30-40lb, depending on type.
