Writing For Emotional Impact changed everything for me. It's the best book out there on screenwriting and I don't understand people don't really know about it. Also one of my favorites. It covers the most important thing that many other books skip over: how to make the reader/viewer FEEL SOMETHING. The "Best Horror of the Year" collections edited by Ellen Datlow are phenomenal, and there's a Best of the Best Of's as well. "Song For the Unraveling of the World" by Brian Evenson is a collection I adore, as are "Books of Blood" by Barker. H. P. Lovecraft is very good at dread-inducing existential horror, and I recommend you read that.

For lesser known ones: 'The Masque of Vyle' by Andy Chambers is a great little novella. Very clever. 'The Carrion Throne' by Chris Wraight is a good little detective book. 'Lord of the Night' by Simon Spurrier is interesting as it's a NIght Lord book before ADB, and the writer is now a very respected comics writer. '.

I merely compiled together ten "best books ever" lists and scored titles based on placement and frequency. It seems that the inclusion of The Da Vinci Code, along with the list being very Anglocentric, is what has made people most angry. The Brothers Karamazov (the best novel ever written) . Demons (very very close to fight with Karamazov as the best one, the only thing that makes me put Karamazov above Demons is the fact that At Tikhon being the "last chapter" wasn't Dostoevsky's original idea) .
