Dec 18, 2012 · Those old snappers are built like tanks. Mine is a 78 model with the cast aluminum deck, which looks like a hi-vac, but isn't, but i'm still very pleased with the way it cuts. I like the simplicity of the drive system too and how well it works, though some owners have complained about the differential when using them on hills and slopes. Since you mulch I would take the mulching deck over the Hi-Vac. The mulching deck will disperse clippings better and not build up like bagging decks. Also, the mulcher will bag very well so there would be no real disadvantage for occasional cleanups. The only difference in the commercial unit are the wheels (steel with bearings).It would be easiest to use an engine off of another snapper though since the shaft will be the correct length and be set up for the self propell belt. If u can't find another 125 on cl or eBay my next hope would be an old Briggs 13-series 5hp I/C engine. Heck, or a WR 145 or 185.
